How did you get into the industry and what brought you here?
I started out working for a freight forwarder, then set up on own with a vehicle then merged with another business after a period of time to set up Youngs Transportation. It’s a route that so many business owners take, starting at the bottom, learning the trade and working your way up.
How long have you worked in the sector?
I have been in the business for 36 years.
What does the word ‘logistics’ mean to you?
Simple – getting commodities to the right place at the right time.
What makes the logistics industry such a great place to work?
Diversity. We have everything from owner-operators to multi-nationals that at the end of the day strive to achieve the same result.
There are so many roles, not just driving. You have to have a great team to be successful.
What can we do to encourage young people to work in logistics?
Education is key. We need to show the public that you can have an interesting career in the industry.
What breadth of roles does your company offer?
We have a range of driving roles: planning, driver management but also warehouse management and operations.
What does National Lorry Week mean to you?
It’s our opportunity to show the public what’s great about our industry.
Anything else you want to add?
There should be an industry-recognised qualification for people that want to work in medium-sized businesses. We have university graduates that aim to work for the larger multi-nationals but there should be something a little more in depth than a Transport Managers CPC which is available for college students that may encourage them to enter the business.
