As part of last year’s National Lorry Week, and in response to the national HGV driver shortage, RHA launched a competition to win training to gain an HGV licence.
We received thousands of entries from across the UK but had to choose only two winners.
Congratulations to Charlotte and Michael who will now commence their driver training.
Charlotte Wilkinson, Durham
“I entered the competition because I have always wanted to be able to go for my class one licence, this competition gave me a chance to develop new skills and gain vast knowledge and experience from the RHA. I’ve had a huge interest in the industry from an early age. My normal job role is working for Durham County Council in the Highways Department. This involves being heavily involved with delivering winter maintenance throughout the County which I thoroughly enjoy doing.
“When I got the call just before Christmas, I couldn’t believe I had won, I honestly thought it was a joke. But speaking over the phone I found that it was believable. My emotions ran high, and I did cry as this is a huge opportunity for myself to develop my skills and prove to myself that I am capable of doing this. I am just so thankful to the RHA for doing this competition and giving people the opportunity to gain driver qualifications. It’s an unbelievable prize and I am very pleased to have been picked as one of the prize winners.”
Michael Stirling, Edinburgh
“I entered the competition as I was made redundant at the start of the pandemic after working within the Covid-19 testing programme. I wanted to find a more permanent career for when my temporary role was over and transport seemed like a pretty solid industry that offers me job security and a career for life.
“I’m a bit taken aback by winning the competition, I entered thinking I had no chance so when I received the phone call telling me I’d won it was a massive surprise and I’m looking forward to starting my training in March.”
